USe and Integration of Photography
Visual literacy is the next big trend in education. Students need to be able to read images according to several common core standards (Finley, 2014). Teachers need to integrate visual information with other information in print and digital texts. There are many ways to integrate visual literacy into my classroom. Visuals come in several different formats including photos, storyboards, magazines, maps, collages, comics, timelines, videos, and websites to name a few. Engaging students in visual thinking strategies, such as higher order thinking and questioning, encourages them to think critically about what they see. Visual literacy may seem untraditional to some educators, but in a 21st century classroom, it is necessary for students to have opportunities to think through, about, and with images (Finley, 2014).
