Application
The strategies, tools, and resources used in this workshop connect to the common core standards and curriculum. Once the teacher becomes comfortable using the new applications, they will be able to teach their students how to use the applications to create projects and presentations in the classroom.
One of the characteristics of science is Habits of Mind. One standard listed under this category calls for students to use computers, cameras, and recording devices for capturing observations. Participants can teach the elements, principles, and styles they learned in the workshop to their students. This will empower them to use the classroom’s iPads as recording devices. Teachers can encourage students to capture observations during science experiments, or even on field trips to museums or habitats.
One characteristic of Literary Reading is craft and structure. One standard says that students should be able to describe the overall structure of a story including describing how the beginning introduces the story, the middle provides major events and challenges, and the ending concludes the action. Storyboards can be used to aid in this development. Students can read a storyboard and retell the beginning, middle, and ending.
Another characteristic of Literary Reading is integration of knowledge and ideas. One standard calls for students to use information gained from the illustrations and words in a print or digital text to demonstrate understanding of its characters, setting, or plot. Photo Stories should be used to develop visual literacy by interpreting images to understand the characters, setting, and plot.
One of the characteristics of Informational Reading is integration of knowledge and ideas. One standard states that students should interpret information presented visually, orally, or quantitatively and explain how the information contributes to an understanding of the text in which it appears. Infographics created using the PiktoChart application can help the participants teach their students how to interpret visual information. Understanding text features is another reading standard that students can acquire though infographics. Features including charts, graphs, diagrams, time lines, and animations can easily be created using PiktoChart.
