INTRODUCTION
The strategies that will be covered during the workshop stem from the need for visual literacy in the classroom. Participants will learn strategies on how to apply digital photography principles to capture and/or select images that can be used to teach students. Another strategy that will be explored is the creation and uses of photo stories, storyboards, and infographics in the classroom.
The tools that will be used during the workshop include iPads and/or laptops or desktop computers. The iPad is an iOS-based line of tablet computers created by Apple Inc. It is designed for those who want a mobile device that is smaller than a laptop, yet bigger than a smartphone. (webopedia.com/TERN/I/iPad.html)
The resources that will be used during this workshop include Story Board That and Piktochart. Storyboard That is an online application used to create storyboards and graphic organizers. This application has hundreds of characters, scenes, and layouts to choose from. There is also the option to upload your own photographs to create educational activities and stories.

DefinitionsDESIGN ELEMENTS
Space is the distance created, in a given, area, around objects in the image. Color adds emphasis to imagery through hue, intensity, and brightness and color can be used to separate and organize information. Texture is defined by the degree of roughness or smoothness of a surface and how the surface appears to feel. DESIGN PRINCIPLES Focal point is used when there is something the photographer wants the views to pay attention to and look at. Repetition consists of repeating elements that create harmony and unity. Movement is used to create the look or feeling of action. COMPOSTIONAL STYLES Leading lines easily capture a viewer’s attention and lead a person’s eyes toward the focal point. Rule of thirds is created by placing the focal point where two horizontal lines and two vertical lines meet. Figures vs. background is the relationship between the objects in the image and their surrounding. |
Values & BenefitsTeachers need this workshop to understand the need for their students to develop visual literacy, as well as to learn simple, yet effective, ways to incorporate digital materials to aid in this development. The benefits of participating in this workshop include:

applied applicationsAfter reading Comic Strips as a Text Structure for Learning to Read, I learned that, nowadays, children need to learn how to read digital literacy. Visual literacy skills are needed due to the increased usage of technology in both schools and homes (Mcvicker,2007). Comic strips are a great way to introduce visual literacy skills because it is less intimidating to new readers. They have interesting pictures, humor, and few words. In addition to aiding visual literacy development, comic strips can also be used to teach most reading and grammar standards, such as inferencing and types of sentences (McVicker, 2007).
After reviewing Reading the Big Picture: A Visual Literacy Curriculum for Today, I learned that visual literacy can be defined as reading and writing through pictures. The article mentioned that teachers spend too much time teaching grammar and paragraph construction and not enough time teaching visual communication (Silverman & Piedmont, 2016). This may be a good idea, especially for struggling readers. They can build reading confidence by learning how to read pictures with minimal text. Critical Viewing and Critical Thinking Skills written by David Considine stated visual literacy as the practice of reading pictures. In order to read pictures one must think critically. (Considine). |
